For longtime Bon Iver sideman S. Carey and Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter John Raymond, the opportunity to collaborate has been a long time in the making. Their new co-release, “Shadowlands,” a stunning, gorgeous collection of songs uprooted from simple genre descriptors. Recorded in the woods of Eau Claire, Wisconsin where the two met almost twenty years ago, the music combines the warmth and beauty of Carey’s aesthetic with the improvisational, spontaneous nature of Raymond’s, blurring the lines between indie folk, forward-thinking jazz, lush pop, and atmospheric electronic music. Admission free, but ticket required. Peebles Theatre

Hungars Cure Parish Positions Available
Choir Section Leaders: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass

Hungars Cure Parish (Episcopal), located on Virginia’s beautiful Eastern Shore, is seeking to fill choir section leader positions (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) to support the Cure Choir under the direction of our Director of Music & Organist. The music program at Hungars Cure is in the process of rebuilding and expanding, and section leader positions are a new initiative for this 400-year-old parish. Our choral repertoire is drawn primarily from the Anglican choral tradition utilizing robustly sung congregational hymnody, chant (both Anglican and Gregorian), congregational and/or choral Mass settings, and anthems/motets. Applicants should have previous choral experience, above average sight-reading skills, and mature interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and respectfully with staff, volunteers, and parishioners. Section leaders will be expected to arrive at rehearsals punctually with their music learned and be ready to lead their section. Applicants need not be Episcopalian, but should feel comfortable supporting the faith of all choir members and parishioners.
Our section leaders are expected to attend weekly Thursday evening rehearsals (presently 5:00-6:00 PM) during the program year (September through early-June). During the program year, the Cure Choir sings every other week in either Hungars Church (9:30 AM Service) or Christ Church (11:15 AM Service), and other incidental evening services such as Choral Evensong or Compline. The full program year service schedule and all choral repertoire is provided by the Director of Music before the start of the program year. In addition to singing with the Cure Choir at their scheduled services, our choir section leaders are invited to sing every week without the volunteers for steady, weekly compensation. Additionally, for individual choice of income vs. schedule flexibility, our section leaders are given the option to sing Sunday services or break during the summer recess.
Compensation: $75 per call, with an average of 6-8 calls per month, plus other required calls for occasions like Christmas and Holy Week. Additional compensation for travel across the Chesapeake Bay is available.
To apply, please contact Eric Dolch, Director of Music & Organist, with a brief bio/résumé by email at hungarscuremusic@gmail.com

Noted Composer Adolphus Hailstork Honored as 2023 Arts Supporter of the Year Alongside 2021 Honoree Paula Bonds
Renowned composer, educator, and friend to the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) Dr. Adolphus Hailstork has been announced as the 2023 Arts Supporter of the Year by Local No. 125 of the American Federation of Musicians.
Dr. Hailstork’s compositions have been performed all over the world, and the VSO has been the beneficiary of his prodigious output on many occasions, including taking his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra to Carnegie Hall.
Presenting the award to Dr. Hailstork will be the previous winner of the award, which is not given every year. Paula Bonds was honored in 2021, but plans for a public event fell victim to the COVID pandemic. Ms. Bonds has worked as a Music Librarian for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra since 2000. Preferring to work quietly but tirelessly behind the scenes, she has endeared herself to everyone who has had the privilege of working alongside her, especially in the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in her role as Assistant Principal Librarian. In that capacity, she has shepherded many Principal Librarians through the organization. Her colleagues speak glowingly of her, and many have moved on to bigger orchestras.

5BF: THEOTOKOS: Cantatas: Yesterday and Today
5 Boroughs Music Festival's 2023-2024 season continues with Cantatas: Yesterday and Today, a side-by-side program presenting old and new church music. This offering links the liturgical traditions of the Baroque with contemporary compositional voices and features the 5BMF debut of the virtuosic THEOTOKOS ensemble! One of the jewels of human achievement is the concept of “complete” church music: original music composed and assigned to every event in the church’s liturgical year. This has been famously accomplished by Palestrina, J.S. Bach, and a handful of others; Telemann’s Harmonischer Gottesdienst is a lesser-known complete cantata cycle, perfectly suited for a chamber ensemble like Theotokos. Doug Balliett, bassist, composer, and leader of Theotokos, is engaged in creating his own contemporary “complete” church music cycle, with cantata-masses for every event in the 3-year Catholic calendar. Cantatas: Yesterday and Today pairs two Telemann cantatas – those assigned to the first two weeks of Advent – with two newly-composed cantatas by Balliett. Featuring: Raha Mirzadegan, soprano; Lukas Papenfusscline, tenor; Will Copeland, violin; Clay Zeller-Townson, bassoon; Doug Balliett, viola da gamba; Elliot Figg, harpsichord. Tickets. https://5bmf.org/events/theotokos/ St. Mary's Church, 440 Grand St., MANHATTAN

Jazzukkah for Hanukkah
The Annual Hanukkah Concert Produced by the American Society for Jewish Music and co-sponsored by YIVO, and the Center for Jewish History. It has become a tradition that the performance opens with a Hanukkah story by the great Yiddish author, Isaac Bashevis Singer. Once again, this year, Eleanor Reissa, the Tony Award-winning director, actress, and author of the recent memoire The Letters Project: A Daughter’s Journey will be the reader for the program. The Jazzukkah Project is an ensemble that's putting a new sonic spin on the Hanukkah canon, some in English, some Hebrew and some instrumental. Their music pays homage to and updates familiar Hanukkah classics with a special flair, mixing them with a cool jazz grove, salsa, bebop, Afro-Cuban, and even some original new tunes, like the ballad “Hanukkah Blues.” Their album is due to be released later this month. Christmas with the Locrian Consort
The Susan A. & Joseph N. Graif Foundation Inc. The Susan A. & Joseph N. Graif Foundation Inc. presents The Locrian Consort in a program of Medieval and Renaissance music. The Locrian Consort was formed in 1972 by a group of backward-looking Old Dominion University students. Since then it has performed a wide variety of music from the earliest days of musical history. The Consort brings expert performance skills...and much lighthearted wit..to its programs played on a wide variety of hand-made instruments, replicated with great historical accuracy. Graif Foundation board member, Dru Stowe leads the Consort, which will offer a program sprinkled with music of the Season in the very live acoustic environment of the Graif's music room. This concert is not to be missed. This is the final concert of the Foundation's inaugural season. The Graif Foundation's mission is to nurture, support and promote the Musical Performing Arts in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and to showcase both local and world-class talent through five public concerts each year. Free and open to the public. Free will offering suggested. Less than 20 seats remain. Reservations are a must. Free - only; 75 seats are available.
